I'm unfamiliar with the Server Core setup... but can't you install these drivers as part of the Windows installation process?

Storage yes, but I'm unaware of a simple way during a stock install to include other drivers. The storage ones are requested, and necessary, during the install. Otherwise the installation location does not show up (unless you don't use VirtIO block devices.) You can definitely add the tools into an image, and there is probably a way to include Ethernet devices ahead of time, but I'm not used to the installation process to know where it happens.

I just select all 3 of the INF files and go... It's always installed everything for me, lol... Just point it at the folder for the right OS and 32 or 64 bit... (Note: This is the way I did it in Scale v4.3... I've not had a chance to use their newer stuff yet.

At what stage are you selecting them?

During the install process... the same place where you go when you're picking the storage drivers.

I rarely do modifications at that stage. Still, handy to have a simple option because a lot of people will get the install done and find that there is no networking and need to know what to do at that point. 🙂

@scottalanmiller Yeah, I was using "Brain Drain" in the more general sense of departure of expertise for any reason, not just poaching, although that can be a common cause.

They did this for the sole reason that this was the only way to continue providing their solutions based on the legacy vendors and their lock out and lack of access.

Not sure where this information came from.
PernixData, SanDisk’s Flashsoft, and ScaleIO have all used kernel modules with vSphere...

The reason these vendors use VSA's is a combination of factors, largest of which writing kernel code is hard...

@PSX_Defector said in Scale Computing Brings First Fully Featured Sub-$25,000 Flash Solution to SMB Market:

SATA is perfectly fine for 90% of what people do. It's the 8% that need something more that would need SAS based while the last 2% will need PCI-E performance.

With numbers like those, ML seems like an odd place to be talking/worrying about it. Also, are the last 10% really looking at a Scale Cluster? I suppose some percentage of them might be.

90% of what people do, not 90% of people. It's a much higher percentage of people. That's why the Scale HC3 tiering system is such a good fit, we believe. It allows the majority of your storage to be tuned to sit on the SATA drives, which are perfectly fast enough for 90% of your needs, and lets the 10% of your needs that need to be on high performance SSD to sit there without needing two different solutions.

And with our heat mapping technology we help to tune the workloads for what is used rather than forcing you to pick manually for all workloads. You can override this with manual priorities, but on its own it self tunes.

So our hope is that the 90/10 split which is a good way to think of it actually makes Scale ideal for the majority of users because they have the 90/10 mix rather than in spite of it.

It's all ethernet, so you could mix it together on a single switch and just VLAN them apart from each other.

I'm trying to be blunt. 🙂

Do I need a switch at all for the backplane or can they communicate directly? Do I need to factor in 10GigE switches for redundancy as well?

Did we manage to answer your questions?

When you say "in a business capacity"... Do you mean any business or just certain sizes? What is the reasoning? I know you think the FreeNAS community can be very brash/vile at times based on some of your earlier posts to people asking about FN.

      http://www.smbitjournal.com/2015/07/the-jurassic-park-effect/

Basically you are getting a highly stateful system where support is critical but in a crippled manner compared to just using FreeBSD. You are getting something easy to set up but difficult to support. If anything goes wrong you are in very tough shape. And updates come a bit behind. So you have a number of small issues that all add up to a not very business friendly product.
